A record 72.49% turnout in Rajasthan Assembly Elections 2013

Jaipur: The people of Rajasthan came out in large numbers to vote in the Rajasthan assembly elections 2013, registering a record 72.49 per cent turnout.

The elections for 199 assembly constituencies out of the total 200, were conducted peacefully, barring a few minor incidents. Elections for the remaining one constituency, Churu, which were postponed owing to the post-nomination death of a Bahujan Samaj Party candidate, will be held on 13th December.

The turnout in the 2008 assembly elections in the state stood at 67.5 per cent.

Disturbances were witnessed in Saleempur in Dausa, at Rein in Alwar and near Deeg-Kumher in Bharatpur, where the police fired in the air to disperse a group of persons trying to disturb polling.

Besides, a pick-up vehicle was set ablaze at Fatehpur in Sikar while an attempted booth capturing in Rupwas in Bharatpur led to voting being suspended temporarily.

There were also complaints from some constituencies about voters’ names missing from voter lists.

Chief minister Ashok Gehlot of the Congress and state BJP president Vasundhara Raje thanked the people of Rajasthan for their cooperation in the peaceful conduct of the elections.

Mr. Gehlot cast his vote, along with his family, at the Vardhaman middle school in Jodhpur’s Mahamandir area, while Ms. Raje, accompanied by her son Dushyant Singh, cast hers at a school in her constituency Jhalrapatan.

A total of 4,08,29,330 voters cast their votes at 47223 polling stations through 53045 Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs), sealing the fate of 2096 candidates, including 166 female candidates.
