Army Major dies in a fire incident in Tawang

Major Prasad Mahadik, 31, was posted about 35 km from the Indo-China border in Arunachal since October last year.

An Indian Army Major posted in Tawang, Arunachal Pradesh, lost his life in a tragic fire incident on Saturday. 31-year-old Major Prasad Mahadik was “performing his duties near the India-China border” when a freak accident proved fatal, sources said.

The young soldier’s body was brought to Mumbai late yesterday, and a funeral is scheduled to be held today. Mahadik, who is survived by his wife, parents and a younger sister, had reportedly joined the Army in March 2012 and was posted at Tawang since October last year.

Locals thronged at his residence in Bolinj in Virar West on Monday to pay their respects to the grieving family.

Without elaborating on the details of the fire, Major Pranjal Jadhav of the Zilla Sainik Welfare officer (ZSWO) said, “As of now the only confirmation we have is that Major Prasad Mahadik passed away while he was performing his duties at Tawang on the Chinese border.”

Palghar Collector Dr Prashant Narnavre assured the family assistance and said, “We are in touch with the family and coordinating with them on all aspects”.
