Disability is a condition which can affect anyone at any stage in life whether it is for short duration which confines us to certain unfortunate incidents in life. There arises a need to create barrier free environment to enable full participation. This was stated by Delhi Social Welfare Minister Rajendra Pal Gautam today after inaugurating a photo and short film exhibition on “Barrier Free World for all” and the conference on “Making Delhi Barrier free – challenges and way forward”. The exhibition-conference was organised by Department of Social Welfare, Office of State Commissioner for persons with disabilities, Indira Gandhi National Centre for Arts in collaboration with CBM India Trust.

While congratulating the organisers for this noble and kind initiative to make a barrier free world, He conveyed his happiness that the Delhi Government is taking steps in right earnest to create a barrier free environment for the disabled. The new RPWd Act 2016 also lays down the standards of accessibility for the physical environment, transportation, information and communications.

Delhi Social Welfare Minister said laws and acts were present earlier also but there is a need to implement them with a view to achieve success. There should be monitoring committees and vigilance committees to look after those who do not follow rules. Stringent action should be taken for the violation of these rules, if not implemented in proper manner.

He said this exhibition would give an impact in the lives of disable people how they cope up with the lives in their day to day activities as there is a need to sensitise people and institutions on the needs of persons with disabilities. The new Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act emphasises on inclusive education. Society need to think different for them as they are not the disable they are differently able-d people.
