MR. MANGU SINGH
2ND Managing Director, Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC)
(Tenure: 1st January, 2012 onwards)

Born in Bijnor (Uttar Pradesh) on 15th December, 1955, Mr. Mangu Singh received his early education from his native place and later graduated in civil engineering from University of Roorkee (now IIT Roorkee) in 1979 with an outstanding academic performance. Thereafter, he got into the elite Indian Railways Services of Engineers (IRSE) through the 1981 Examination conducted by the UPSC. He then worked in the Indian Railways in various capacities including Deputy Chief Engineer, Kolkata Metro Railway (1989-1996).

Mr. Singh joined Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) in 1997 in the capacity of Chief Engineer/Chief Project Manager and moved upwards to Executive Director and then Director (Works).

He has contributed greatly in the Project implementation of Kolkata Metro and has been responsible for bringing revolutionary changes in the execution of large Metro engineering projects (civil) within tight deadlines and budget. Mr. Singh has vast experience and expertise in construction of underground structures in Urban Environment and is perhaps the most experienced engineer in this field in the country.

Besides, Mr. Singh is also a recipient of various prestigious awards and honours like the National Award (Railway Week Award 1996) for his contribution in completing the Kolkata Metro Rail Project, distinguished Alumni Award – Global Meet IIT (Roorkee) 2007 etc.

In addition, he has successfully headed the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) Projects of Delhi Metro, the only such successful project in the Railway Transportation sector in the world. He has been instrumental in preparing the Master Plan and Detailed Project Reports for Metro system in other cities of the country like Mumbai, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Chennai, Kolkata, Lucknow, Kochi, Jaipur, Ludhiana and Ahmedabad.

His experience includes Rail based transportation projects, its planning & execution, procurement of works and services for Mega Projects on Design and Built Contracts basis, handling multilateral funding agencies, development of bid documents for Metro Projects on PPP basis, management of Concession contracts and CDM projects.

DR. E. SREEDHARAN
1st Managing Director, Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC)
(Tenure: 4th November, 1997 – 31st December, 2011)

Born in a remote village in Palghat (Palakkad) district of Kerala on 12th June, 1932; Dr. Elattuvalapil Sreedharan received his early education in his native place and later graduated from the Government Engineering College, Kakinada, in April 1953. After a small stint as Lecturer in Civil Engineering in Kerala Polytechnic, Calicut, he joined the Bombay Port Trust as an Apprentice Engineer for a year, when he was selected for the Indian Railway Service (IRS) of Engineers and joined Southern Railway as a Probationary Assistant Engineer in December 1954.

He held a number of assignments as Assistant Engineer, Executive Engineer, Divisional Engineer and Deputy Chief Engineer on the Southern and South Eastern Railways, when he was in-charge of new line constructions such as Quilon – Ernakulammetre gauge line, Mangalore-Hassan railway line, a number of doubling projects, bridge & tunnel projects and also maintenance of permanent ways in Palghat, Hubli and Bezawada Divisions. During this period, he was given the Railway Minister’s Award for restoring the Pamban Railway Bridge in 46 days, 125 spans of which were washed away in a tidal wave in December 1963. As Deputy Chief Engineer, he was in-charge of investigation, planning and design of the first ever Metro in the country, viz. at Calcutta, from 1970 to 1975.

From October 1979 to November 1980, he was on deputation to the Ministry of Shipping & Transport as Chairman & Managing Director of the Country’s premier Shipyard at Cochin. During this tenure, the first ship built by this Shipyard, RANI PADMINI, was launched.

He was promoted as General Manager, Western Railway in July 1987, and in July 1989 elevated to the post of Member Engineering, Railway Board & ex-officio Secretary to the Government of India. On retirement in June 1990, he was put in charge of the prestigious Konkan Railway as its Chairman & Managing Director. On completion of the Konkan Railway Project, he joined the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation on 5th November 1997 as its first Managing Director.

Dr. Sreedharan’s is credited for changing the face of Indian public transport by his tireless work in building the Konkan Railway and the Delhi Metro. It is only because of his sheer hard work and dedication that he was awarded the ‘Padma Shree’ by the Government of India in 2001, the ‘Man of the Year Award’ by The Times of India in 2002 and was named as one of ‘Asia`s Heroes’ by TIME in 2003. Besides, the Government of France honored him with the Chevalier de la Legion d’Honneur in 2005.

Before stepping down as the 1st Managing Director of DMRC on 31st December, 2011, Dr. E. Sreedharan handed over the reins of the Delhi Metro to his worthy successor Mr. Mangu Singh to take Delhi Metro to greater heights in Phase III.

DELHI METRO – GENESIS AND DEVELOPMENT
The Delhi Metro achieved the following historic feats under the inspirational leadership of Dr. E Sreedharan

  • 1998: Work on the Delhi Metro project starts on October 1, 1998.
  • 2002: The first section of the Delhi Metro (Shahdara – Tis Hazari) opens to the public on December 25, 2002.
  • 2006: DMRC completes the construction of Delhi Metro’s phase 1 consisting of 65.10 kilometres of Metro lines on November 11, 2006 two years and nine months ahead of schedule.
  • 2008: The first section under Phase 2 from Shahdara to Dilshad Garden is inaugurated on June 3, 2008.
  • 2009: Delhi Metro reaches NOIDA in Uttar Pradesh for the first time with the inauguration of the Yamuna Bank – NOIDA City Centre section on November 12, 2009.
  • 2010: With the inauguration of the Inderlok – Mundka section on April 2nd, 2010, Delhi Metro’s first ever Standard Gauge corridor is opened.
  • 2010: Delhi Metro reaches Gurgaon in Haryana for the first time with the opening of the Qutab Minar – HUDA City Centre section on June 21, 2010.
  • 2010: Delhi Metro reserves the first coach for women from October 2, 2010.
  • 2010: Delhi Metro connects Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, the main venue for the Commonwealth Games, with the opening of the Central Secretariat – Sarita Vihar corridor on October 3, 2010. More than 35,000 people use the Metro to reach the stadium to witness the opening ceremony.
  • 2010: Delhi Metro inducts its first six coach train into service on December 23, 2010.
  • 2011: The Airport Express Link begins operations on February 23, 2011.
  • 2011: DMRC reaches Ghaziabad in Uttar Pradesh for the first time with the inauguration of the Anand Vihar ISBT – Vaishali section on July 14, 2011
  • 2011: The Phase 2 construction work of DMRC comprising 125 kilometres formally comes to an end with the inauguration of the Kirti Nagar – Ashok Park Main corridor on August 27, 2011.
  • 2011: The Group Of Ministers gave their go ahead to the proposed Phase 3 corridors of the Delhi Metro in August, 2011. The DMRC is expected to build another 116 kilometres of Metro corridors in this phase. The work will be completed by 2016.
