ANOTHER BREAKTHROUGH SURGERY BY SIR GANGA RAM HOSPITAL DOCTORS TEAM- Woman’s own fat from thigh helps recreate a “Natural” missing breast
23 years back… a fortunate couple in Indore was blessed with a sweet and adoring little baby girl. The couple
was on top of the world that day as their princess daughter had landed on the earth, filling their lives with happiness and serenity. They named her “Divya” (real name not revealed due to privacy concerns).
As the boat of time sailed at its own pace, Divya was growing up, maturing into a beautiful girl day by day.  When she reached puberty, her body curves including breasts started appearing to be more prominent. But  to her shock , her left breast was not growing but the right was normal .
The family rushed to a doctor and were depressed when they  got to know that she is a victim of the Poland syndrome . Poland’s syndrome is a genetic  problem  that typically appears  during a girl’s teenage years. This encompasses the absence of breast  growth in just one side of the body and the lack of chest  muscles. In other words ,  it is a deformity in a body in which one breast gets developed and the other one is not able to grow, leaving the person with an uneven body figure.
With every passing day, she started feeling depressed because of this ill-fated condition. When she looked at herself in the mirror, clouds of self-consciousness and discomfort hovered over her mind seeing her asymmetrical body. This gave her a hard time facing herself as well as people around her. Her social life was adversely affected by all this. The deformity didn’t let her feel normal and happy among other female friends. As a result, gradually, she started curbing herself from the social network of people. The situation got worse when she entered into the corporate world when she got a job. Her lop-sided body was the major concern for her embarrassment there. At the workplace, many a times, she was being mocked at by other colleagues. Apart from this, as she approached the 23rd year of her life, parents started to find a suitable match for her, but many of their efforts went in vein as Divya’s breast deformity posed a problem.Every day,she had to jostle with all these upsetting factors. This punctured her self confidence badly. She was no longer a buoyant girl. World seemed to get shattered for her and life seemed too dull, as if it had lost the meaning.
But, as it is said that optimism is the key to contended life, Divya, after a lot of self-struggle, recomposed herself and tried to find the bits of optimism left in her. To cope with the drowning self-esteem, she thought of enlightening herself about the deformity she has so that some solution can be learnt. She explored the internet, took recommendation from many doctors and found that there are two ways to get this abnormal situation under control. One is through breast implant and the other one is by the means of fat grafting or fat transfer.
With such a vast ocean of information all around, she wasn’t able to judge which option is right and to what extent it is effective.
To seek expert guidance and assistance, she flew to Delhi and fixed an appointment with one of the most renownedplastic and cosmetic surgeon practicing in Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in New Delhi.  Dr Vivek  Kumar is known for his vast and comprehensive experience in the field of cosmetic and plastic surgery.
Dr. Kumar didn’t encouraged breasts implants. This was mainly because he listed a few of the points that might not let breast implant surgery to work for Divya. One of the major concerns that can pose a problem in the future for her is the implant incisions as she didn’t wanted anybody to know that she has undergone any type of surgery. This  discouraged  Divya to opt for breast implants. Moreover, breast implants are a bit incapable to give the woman a natural feel of the breast. Therefore, doctor signaled her to move ahead on the path of fat grafting.

Fat grafting: a boon for rectifying breasts malformations

Fatgrafting, also identified as fat transfer or fat injections, is a natural, marginally invasive surgery for those seeking breast intensification or correcting the deformity instigated in the breasts due to Poland Syndrome. Fat is removed from many parts of the body where there is a considerable amount of fat, such as the thighs, stomach or buttocks. The fat is then decontaminated, to isolate the healthy fat cells from the impaired ones, and vaccinated into another region of the body that is deficient in volume. Dr. Kumar referred fat grafting as a natural alternative to implants and fillers.
According to Dr Vivek Kumar , consultant , Department of plastic and  cosmetic surgery , Sir Ganga Ram Hospital , “ Fat grafting is the latest technique for  breast augmentation and has reached India recently . When implemented appropriately, it can enrich the size and shape of the breasts. Fat grafting is a superb way to fine-tune breast size for irregularity and can correct the all-famous Poland Syndrome. Apart from this, it is being used for many other cosmetic and  reconstructive procedures of breast . “
According to Dr Vivek Kumar ,  “We performed the surgery  on 28th June 2014 . During the surgery , we injected 450 ml of autologous fat into the left breast ,  which was taken from her thigh . During injecting the fat we took care that it  is dispersed evenly . Extra precautions were taken to inject fat into soft cavities and not into chest cavity. “

Fat grafting procedure

The procedure is commonly commenced by using a cannula. Fat is gathered using a distinct suction cannula by way of sterile technique. Once abundant fat is taken from the contributor area, which was thigh ,  in the case of Divya, it is supposed to be filtered. This cleansing or purification often requires the use of a sieve which spirals the fat and eliminates contaminations. After making it completely clean, the fat is then injected into the areas demanding intensification. In Divya’s situation, the fat was transferred through injections on the region of her left breast. The injection needle is recurrently injected in and out of the areas to be improved numerous times. This creates a ‘grid’ of threads of fat graft. The areas that were inoculated may then be massaged by the doctor to create an apt shape. After the treatment is finished efficaciously, the bandageor dressing is placed cautiously to the treated area.
After executing the needed sessions of fat transfer surgery successfully, doctor advised her not to sit or lie on vaccinated breast area for a particular time period. He also advised her to opt for a regular massage program after the procedureas this is vital in order to make certain that swelling and bruising get resolvedin 2 to 3 weeks.
Amazingly, to everybody’s surprise, by the end of third week, Divya felt to look more like a perfect feminine beauty. Initially, for few seconds, she wasn’t able to recognize herself! The reaction that was witnessed after Divya looked at her fully formed breasts contour was simply mesmerizing. She felt as if a new Divya has taken birth after the surgery. A rush of happiness, confidence and contentment ran in her spine as soon as she realized that the surgery has been executed successfully with the help of Dr. Vivek Kumar and has been gifted with a fully-formed, well-shaped left breast. She has finally said goodbye to the deformity that had been troubling her all through. With her constant will-power, unswerving determination and optimism, she has finally been able to win over her problem. Fat  grafting truly worked as a boon for her!
