Bengaluru Development Minister K.J. George resigns from the Cabinet

Bengaluru: Bengaluru Development Minister K.J. George resigned from the Cabinet on Monday evening, hours after a JMFC court at Madikeri ordered filing of FIR against him and two top police officers in connection with the alleged suicide of Deputy Superintendent of Police M.K. Ganapathy.

The deceased officer had, in a television interview before his death, alleged harassment by the three. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah had convened an emergency Cabinet meeting to decide on Mr. George’s resignation following the court verdict.

Ganapathy was found hanging at a private lodge in Madikeri on July 7.

The Opposition BJP and JD(S) had stalled Legislature Session demanding his resignation ever since the television interview surfaced, while the government had firmly backed Mr. George until the court judgement.

In a press meet after the resignation, Mr. George said he was quitting to make way for an impartial probe. He expressed confidence that he would “come out clean”, and stated that he would explore the legal options before him.
