New Delhi District launches Neighbourhood Watch Scheme in 23 localities of Mandir Marg and Kali Bari Area

Adding a new chapter to the Community Policing initiatives in the New Delhi area, the Joint Commissioner of Police, New Delhi Range, Shri M.K. Meena, formally launched the Neighbourhood Watch Scheme (NWS) in the residential zones of PS Mandir Marg in an impressive gathering attended by the Area Welfare Officers, RWA Presidents, office-bearers and enthusiastic residents. The first issue of Neighbourhood Watch Newletter ‘Neighbour Forever’ was released on the occasion. The Jt.CP New Delhi Range and DCP, New Delhi, Shri SBS Tyagi, also distributed Neighbourhood Watch I-Cards to the Presidents of various RWAs. Besides, a display-cum-demonstration of various security gadgets was organized for the benefit of the residents.

With the help of the Neighbourhood Watch Scheme, the Police aspires to involve the community in reducing property-related offences like burglary and snatching, improve community spirit in crime prevention and police-community relations and also reduce juvenile delinquency by involving youth. The Neighbourhood Watch initiative involves formation of committees, issuance of ID cards which would carry basic details about the individuals and holding of regular meetings to create more awareness on several aspects of the security of the area and safety of the residents.

The objective of the Scheme is to make communities more aware and ‘alert’ about their surroundings. Sustained efforts to encourage the members to share each others’ contact information for better response during any emergency, increased consciousness about the well-being of the neighbourhood, instilling a sense of ownership and pride about the neighbourhood and on-ground drives to conduct security audit of the neighbourhood and installation of security systems to overcome the weak areas identified during the audit, are some of the important aspects of the scheme.

The Delhi Police has already put up boards in different localities to improve the level of awareness about the Scheme. Besides, regular awareness meetings are being conducted by the Division and Beat staff in the entire Mandir Marg and Kali Bari area. Alertness of the neighbours is bound to restrict the entry and movement of unauthorized hawkers, vendors, etc. in the area. Efforts are also being made to encourage the communities to install security devices such as CCTV cameras, door chains, Magic Eye, cross-linked alarms, etc. The Scheme also seeks to ensure greater participation of members in verification of servants & tenants. With ‘Shanti, Seva aur Nyaya’ as its core objective, the Delhi Police, through this Scheme, seeks to reverse the criminal invasion of the neighbourhood by making the residents more assertive about their neighbourhood.
