DJB fully geared to meet  the city’s water demand in summer.

Every year water demand in the city peaks in the summer season. To meet the situation, arrangements are made in advance. DJB has taken the following initiatives to provide good quality water services during the summer of 2013.

DJB is ensuring average production levels of 835 Million Gallons per Day (MGD) during summer. This production is expected to increase further by 80 MGD after commissioning of Munak Canal. The issue is being strongly pursued with Govt. of India and Govt. of Haryana. In anticipation of the receipt of additional water from Munak Canal, DJB has completed the construction of 3 new Water Treatment Plants at Dwarka, Bawana and Okhla.

DJB has been expanding its infrastructure in a planned manner to meet the demand of both planned and unplanned colonies. With the commissioning of new reservoirs under the scheme of rationalised distribution of supply, 87 primary UGRs with pumping stations are functioning. This has made supply more assured and equitable in the command areas of these 87 UGRs.

To increase access to potable water supply to all citizens, last year, water lines were laid in 41 unauthorised colonies. Now water supply through piped network is available in 800 unauthorised colonies in addition to the existing areas covered under the planned network and 126 more unauthorised colonies will be covered by the end of this year.

To make the water distribution system more efficient and to ensure better quality water to the consumers, about 200 kms of old pipelines have been replaced and 333 major leakages were repaired in the last one year.

Preventive maintenance works like flushing of water mains, cleaning of UGRs and servicing of equipments at the pump houses has been carried out to ensure uninterrupted functioning of water installations during summer.

Additional tube wells have been installed/re-bored where technical feasibility existed in the area.

400 new water tankers with stainless steel containers have been introduced. These tankers are fitted with GPS tracking devices. An efficient mechanism developed by DIMTS is in position to monitor the movement of these tankers to ensure timely delivery of water at the consumer’s  end.

Nodal officers have been nominated for effective supervision of the functioning of the water emergencies which are working round the clock to address public complaints. Each maintenance division has a stand by task force which can be deputed at short notice to deal with any emergent situation of disruption of water supply. The enforcement department of DJB is also carrying out surprise checks at the Control Rooms and at the consumers’ end to verify timely addressal of complaints as well as reduce wastage of water.

About 142 MGD of treated effluent from Sewage Treatment Plants is being used for various purposes such as irrigation, horticulture, power plant and other non- potable uses- which has reduced the load on potable supply network.

All the 12 DJB water laboratories (including 6 zonal laboratories) have been upgraded and are fully geared up for intensive checking of water samples on a daily basis to ensure adequate surveillance of potable water supplied to citizens.

Till such time as the planned infrastructure of distribution of water supply is expanded further to cover Sangam Vihar group of colonies, as an interim arrangement, DJB has installed 151 tube-wells in the area and has deployed tanker services. In order to meet the rising demand during summer, necessary maintenance works related to tube-wells have been carried out and all the tube-wells are functioning efficiently.  In the last four years, about 55 tube-wells have been installed and 12 additional tube-wells are in the process of installation.  The tanker strength dedicated to Sangam Vihar group of colonies has been augmented by 25% over last year and DJB is carrying out  80 – 90 trips per day. Water for drinking purposes supplied by DJB through tankers in all parts of Delhi, including Sangam Vihar, is free of cost.

Despite no augmentation of resources, data from the Census 2011 shows that access to potable piped water supply in the NCT of Delhi has risen to 81.30% over the last 10 years.
