DJB to Commission Kirari Underground Reservoir and Pumping Station

Kirari UGR to benefit residents of about 42 Unauthorized Colonies in the first phase

New Delhi: The Delhi Jal Board, in its sustained efforts to cover new areas with potable water supply, will be commissioning the 15.90 Million Litres Per Day (MLD) capacity Kirari Underground Reservoir (UGR) and Pumping Station on 18.07.2014. This is an important step in ensuring that the basic necessity of the residents living in the unplanned areas is met. This is as per the Master Plan being implemented by DJB for equitable distribution of water in Delhi, and is also a part of the drive to expand the piped water network services within the city.

Sh. Nitin Gadkari, the Hon’ble Minister of Road, Transport, Highways and Shipping, with additional charges of the Ministries of Rural Development and Panchayati Raj, Drinking Water and Sanitation, Government of India, will inaugurate the Kirari Underground Reservoir and Pumping Station on 18.07.2014 in the presence of Dr. Udit Raj, Member of Parliament, Shri Anil Jha, MLA Kirari Constituency Assembly, Shri S.K. Srivastava, Chief Secretary of Delhi, Shri Vijay Kumar, CEO, DJB, and other senior officers of the Delhi Jal Board.

The commissioning of the project would provide relief to about 1.25 lakh residents of these 42 unauthorized colonies of Kirari Assembly Constituency and bring-in a marked improvement in the environmental and living conditions of the area, as well. The Board has made concerted efforts to cover this area with a piped water supply network by rationalizing its existing water resources.

Currently, DJB meets the needs of the city by providing water from its 7 water treatment plants (WTPs), distributed through a network of 105 primary UGRs and a large number of secondary/local UGRs connected through a web of more than 12,000 km long pipelines. In addition to the supply from surface water sources, DJB uses groundwater through 4,400 tubewells and 10 ranney wells to meet the daily water needs of the residents of Delhi.

The inauguration of the Kirari Reservoir/Pumping Station is another feather in DJB’s cap as it consistently strives to meet its mandate to provide better and more efficient water and sewage services to over 1.8 crore residents of Delhi.
