Devli MLA beats up DJB’s Junior Engineer and hinders public work

New Delhi: The Delhi Jal Board Junior Engineer, Sh. Arun Kumar, was brutally beaten by the MLA from Devli Constituency, Sh. Prakash Jarwal. The MLA, along with his goons, physically assaulted the DJB official at K II Block, Sangam Vihar, where he was supervising the work of drilling of a tube-well which was started this morning. Around 10 am this morning, the MLA came with his cronies and objected to the starting of the work without inauguration by him. It is pertinent to mention that the starting of the work had already been informed by the Junior Engineer much in advance. Taking serious note of this incident, the Delhi Jal Board has lodged an FIR with the Sangam Vihar Police Station.

Sh. Tahir Ali, one of the associates of the MLA, telephonically enquired of Sh. Arun Kumar about the status of the work, and ordered him to stop the work until its inauguration by the MLA. The DJB official politely explained the adverse effect of stopping the ongoing work as it would indefinitely delay the boring of the tubewell causing grave inconvenience to the public.

Subsequently, the MLA of the constituency arrived at the site at about 10 am and alongwith his associates, misbehaved with and manhandled the DJB JE Sh. Arun Kumar. He also slapped the DJB official, breaking his spectacles. The MLA and his associates insisted that no work could be initiated unless it was formally inaugurated by the MLA, Sh. Prakash Jarwal. The above mentioned incident has caused serious injuries to the DJB official Sh. Arun Kumar, leading to his hospitalization.

DJB condemns this unruly behaviour by the MLA Sh. Prakash Jarwal who has been involved in such incidents related to manhandling of DJB staff earlier. In the past, atleast 4 separate occasions of misbehaviour and hindering of public work have occurred where two valve men were brutally beaten-up in the Govindpuri area and in the Tughlaqabad Extension area, and one shift in-charge was slapped and manhandled by the MLA from Devli in the GK I area, and on another occasion a driver of a hired tanker working for DJB was beaten in the Sangam Vihar area.

Since the Sangam Vihar and adjoining areas are unauthorised colonies, DJB faces many constraints in supplying water to these areas. Despite the hurdles, DJB tries its best to provide water to the residents of these areas through its round-the-clock tanker services and tubewells. However, such untoward incidents only hinder DJB’s efforts in meeting the water needs of the residents of the area.

A great deal of inconvenience was caused to the public, due to the incident, as the drivers of the tankers feared for their safety and refused to ferry the water tankers. However, on DJB’s assurance they resumed work and normal tanker services have been restored to the area.
