Foreign secretary S. Jaishankar’s term extended by one year

Foreign Secretary S. Jaishankar, whose two-year term in office comes to an end on 28 January, is extended by one year. Jaishankar, 62, is an officer of the 1977 batch of the Indian Foreign Service.He was appointed foreign secretary in January 2015, after the then foreign secretary, Sujatha Singh, was asked to put in her papers.

A former Ambassador to the US and China, besides being a High Commissioner to Singapore, Jaishankar’s tenure as foreign secretary was expected to be extended. He is also the son of late K. Subrahmanyam, one of India’s leading strategic analysts and civil servants. He was a key member of the Indian team that negotiated the landmark India-US nuclear deal that was signed in 2008.
