India set to double capabilities in Space, says ex-chief of ISRO

India’s capabilities in space research will be doubled with the launch of GSLV Mark-III, which is loaded with features to boost the communication systems of the country, former chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation K. Radhakrishnan has said.

Delivering the 19th convocation address at the Indian Institute of Management-Kozhikode (IIM-K) on Saturday, Dr. Radhakrishnan said the pride factor of India in most of its satellite missions was the use of 90 per cent indigenous components. The Indian cryogenic technology took us to greater heights in achieving our missions and we managed to excel in our space researches by learning from the mistakes of others, he said. Dr. Radhakrishnan, who is now advisor to the ISRO, said the county was now capable of conducting at least one successful satellite launch every month.

“It is a matter of great pride that we are now technologically equipped to carry out 12 successful launches every year and that too with minimum financial resources,” he said.

Presenting the ISRO as the country’s best model on how to handle crucial situations, Dr. Radhakrishnan said the scientists of the organisation were ready to accept tougher targets in difficult times and to improve their capabilities for greater performance. “Our major confidence factor is that we have our own novel way of doing things and to improve innovations in such a way to cater Indian and global needs,” he said.

Urging the young graduates to take India forward with its dynamic and emerging economy, he said the management of micro level issues in technology should be an area of attention for all. Carving out the Indian niche in global economy should be the prime goal of our young generation, he said.

At the 19th convocation ceremony, the titles were awarded to 346 students who completed the Postgraduate Diploma in Management (PGDM) along with those who attended the Executive PGDM and Fellow Programmes in Management. A.C. Muthiah, Chairman of IIM-K, welcomed the gathering. IIM-K Director Kulbhushan Balooni presented the activity report of the academic year.
