NEW DELHI:   Lt. Governor Shri Najeeb Jung today held a meeting at Raj Niwas to discuss the issue of rights of pedestrians, road safety and barrier free movement on the footpaths of Delhi. The meeting was attended by Commissioner of Police, Spl. CP (Traffic), Chairman (NDMC), Commissioner of the three Municipalities, representatives of DDA, PWD and other senior officers of GNCTD.
Dr. Muktesh Chander Special Commissioner Traffic gave a presentation about the status of footpaths and the need to make them user friendly and free from encroachment of all sorts.

Lt. Governor directed all civic agencies as also the PWD and Delhi Police to identify all such road stretches where footpaths need to be freed from hindrances to make them usable for pedestrians in their respective areas, in two weeks time.

A review meeting will be held at Raj Niwas at the end of two weeks to chart out a date wise, time bound action plan for joint action by Municipal Corporations, NDMC, PWD, Delhi Police along with its traffic unit to remove hindrances on the footpath to make them pedestrian friendly. This campaign will run in the city in the next two months and reviewed thereafter.

The Lt. Governor’s office urges all government agencies to successfully implement the campaign and appeals to the public to cooperate in this endeavour for pedestrian safety. In order to escape from penalties of prosecution, shopkeepers and vendors are advised to remove their belongings from the footpath and remove cars parked on them. Construction material, encroachments, garbage and other obstructions on footpaths are desired to be cleared at the earliest.

On 21st November 2014, the Lt. Governor had written to all civic agencies, PWD, DDA, Commissioner of Police to ensure at least one meter dedicated footpath on all roads of Delhi which should be free from encroachment and should be made more user friendly.

The pedestrians on Delhi roads remain the most vulnerable users. In 2014 a total of 742 pedestrians had died in road accidents in Delhi, which constitutes 45% of total fatal accidents. A large number of lives can be saved by ensuring that the conflict of pedestrians with vehicular traffic is minimized. Sustained efforts in this direction can bring down pedestrian fatalities on Delhi roads.

The Lt. Governor said, “The pedestrians are the most vulnerable category on Delhi roads. We need to work concertedly to offer safe and user friendly transit to them on Delhi’s footpaths.”
