NHPC PERFORMANCE HIGHLIGHTS DURING 2011-12

  • Achieved highest ever Net Profit after Tax of Rs. 2771.77 crore which is 27.93 % higher than the net profit after Tax of Rs 2,166.67 crore earned during 2010-11.

 

  • Registered Sales Turnover of Rs. 5509.65 crore as against Rs 4,046.59 crore of last year.
  • Achieved Cumulative sales realization of Rs. 4,415 crore against Rs 3,619 crore achieved during last year.

 

  • Generated 18683 Million Units (MUs) against the target of 18500 Million Units for “Excellent” MoU rating. In 2010-11, the Company had achieved a generation of 18606 MU.

 

  • NHPC has proposed a final dividend of Rs.0.70 for the FY11-12. NHPC paid a dividend of    Rs 738.04 crore to shareholders @ Rs 0.60 per equity share including Rs. 637.40 crore to the Govt. of India for the financial year 2010-11.

 

  • During the FY 2011-12, NHDC (A joint venture between NHPC and Govt. of Madhya Pradesh) generated 4663.68 MU against MOU target of 3200 MU. The net profit of the Company was Rs.646.90 crore and the Company has proposed to pay a dividend of Rs.58.80 crore to its shareholders.

 

  • GOI has conveyed its approval for change in object clause 1a) of Memorandum of Association of NHPC which inter-alia allows NHPC on its own to plan, promote and organize an integrated and efficient development of power in all its aspects through conventional and non-conventional sources in India and abroad.

 

  •  M/s Chenab Valley Power Projects (Private) Limited” has been incorporated on 13.06.2011 for development of  Pakal Dul and other hydroelectric projects in J&K with an aggregate installed capacity of 2120 MW with equity participation of 49% (NHPC), 49% (JKSPDC) & 2% (PTC).

 

  • Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed on 21.07.2011 with Orissa Hydro Power Corporation Limited (OHPC) and Government of Odisha for setting up a Joint Venture Company with OHPC (NHPC 51% and OHPC 49%) to develop hydropower projects in Odisha,

 

  • Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed with Russia’s largest power generating company JSC RusHydro on 23.05.2011 for cooperation in the field of hydropower development, renewable energy sources and other areas of power generation.

 

  • The wet spinning of all the three units of Chamera-III has been completed successfully on 04.3.2012 and 05.3.2012.

 

 

  • During 2011-12, two units (11 MW each) of 44 MW Chutak HE project in J&K was synchronized at partial load due to non-availability of full load.

 

  • Public Hearing of 66 MW Loktak Downstream HE Project has been conducted on 07.6.2011.

 

  • Public Hearing of 520 MW Teesta-IV HE Project has been conducted on 29.3.2012.

 

  • NHPC has prepared and submitted DPRs of 1200 MW Tamanthi HE Project in Myanmar and 770 MW Chamkharchhu-I HE Project in Bhutan.

 

  • NHPC was able to restore generation from Teesta-V and Rangit Power Stations within 6-8 hours of the devastating earthquake that struck West Bengal & Sikkim on 18.9.2011. Major structures at NHPC Power Stations and Projects in these States were safe although damages had occurred to some buildings and roads.

 

  • NHPC presented a cheque of Rs. 7 crore to the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Sikkim, Dr. Pawan Kumar Chamling on 02.12.2011 as a contribution to the “Chief Minister Relief Fund” for the benefit of victims of earthquake which had hit Sikkim 18.09.2011.

 

  • NHPC has undertaken a number of community development initiatives under CSR and spent about Rs.10 crore during 2011-12.The major activities included were skill development/vocational training programs, training for self employment, adoption of ITIs, distribution of scholarships to SC/ST students, organizing health camps, constructing toilets for women etc.

 

  • Obtained concurrence of CEA for 600 MW Tawang-I & 800 MW Tawang-II Projects in Arunachal Pradesh. Environment clearances have also been accorded by MOEF for both these projects.

 

  • Received in-principle forest clearance issued by MOEF for 195 MW Kotli Bhel Stage IA HE project.

 

  • Prepared DPR towards development of wind power project near Salal Power Station in Bidda, J&K.

 

  • Teesta –V Power Station has been validated under VCS mechanism of Verified Emission Reduction (VERs) Scheme.

 

  • Electrified 460 UE/DE villages and provided connections to 1.9 lacs BPL households.  2020 PE villages have also been intensively electrified during the year.

 

  • NHPC has been awarded First Prize by Ministry of Home Affairs, Govt. of India for the year 2009-10 under Indira Gandhi Rajbhasha Award programme for outstanding work in implementation of Rajbhasha amongst Public Sector Undertakings located in Region ‘A’. The award was presented by Her Excellency the President of India Smt. Pratibha Devisingh Patil on 14.09.2011.

 

  • NHPC has achieved first position in terms of disposal of RTI applications among the ten highest RTI applications receiving public authorities, despite remote locations of projects/power stations.

Annual Review 2011-12

 

Incorporated in 1975, NHPC Limited, formerly known as National Hydroelectric Power Corporation Ltd, a MINIRATNA Category-I Enterprise of Government of India is actively involved in construction of Hydroelectric Projects in various parts of the country and generation of power. Today, NHPC supplies the much needed peaking power especially to the Northern and Eastern parts of the country. NHPC has become a listed company on NSE & BSE w.e.f. 01.9.2009.

 

Net Profit: 

The company achieved highest ever net Profit after Tax of Rs 2771.77 crore which is 27.93 % higher than the net profit after Tax of Rs 2,166.67 crore earned during 2010-11.

 

Sales & Revenue Realization:

Operating Power Stations & Power Generation:

Currently, NHPC  operates 14 hydropower stations with a total aggregate capacity of 5295 MW which includes 1000 MW Indira Sagar Project and 520 MW Omkareshwar Project through NHDC Limited – a subsidiary JV of NHPC with Government of Madhya Pradesh (GoMP). NHPC generated 18683 Million Units (MUs) from its own Power Stations against the target of 18500 Million Units for “Excellent” MoU rating for the year. Chamera-I, Dhauliganga, Dulhasti, Loktak, Rangit, Salal, Sewa-II, Tanakpur and Uri Power Stations achieved higher generation than the targets for excellent rating.

 

NHPC has earned a net Unscheduled Interchange amount of Rs.134 crores against Rs.116 crores earned last year, which shows better performance by its Power Stations to maintain and support healthy grid conditions.

 

Capital Expenditure:

The Capex of NHPC for the year 2011-12 was Rs 3,546 crore. The overall Capex for XI plan period stands at Rs 17,269 crore which was met through internal resources, subordinate debt from Government of India, market borrowings and proceeds from IPO. The company has a capex plan of  Rs. 29,000 crore for XII five year plan period.

 

 

Projects under Construction:

10 projects having aggregate installed capacity of 4502 MW are under construction. With the commissioning of these projects, NHPC aspires to become a 9500 MW company in the next five years.

 

During 2011-12 two units (11 MW each) of 44 MW Chutak HE Project got synchronized at Partial load due to non availability of load.  Projects scheduled for the year 2011-12 are now anticipated during 2012-13 as NHPC is putting all efforts to add 1190 MW capacity addition through six projects namely 231 MW Chamera-III, remaining 2 units of 44 MW Chutak, 45 MW Nimoo Bazgo, 132 MW Teesta Low Dam-III, 520 MW Parbati-III & 240 MW Uri-II. Major reasons for non achievement of capacity addition were beyond the control of NHPC as major contribution for delays were attributed to adverse geology, natural calamities (Heavy rainfall/snowfall, cloud burst, landslides etc.), strikes/ bandh called by local groups, law & order problems, etc.

 

 

 

 

Projects under Government Clearance:

NHPC is actively pursuing clearances from Government of India for 5 hydropower projects having aggregate capacity of 5115 MW to be implemented by NHPC on its own.

Diversification:

NHPC is committed to maintain a leading position in hydro sector and also expand its business domain. Government of India has conveyed its approval in Feb 2012 for change in object clause on Memorandum of Association of NHPC which inter-alia allows NHPC on its own to plan, promote and organize an integrated and efficient development of power in all its aspects through conventional and non-conventional sources in India and abroad.

 

Rajiv Gandhi Gramin Vidyutikaran Yojana (RGGVY) & Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) :

The Company has been entrusted with Rural Electrification works under Rajiv Gandhi Gramin Vidyutikaran Yojana (RGGVY). The works are spread over 27 districts in the States of Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Jammu & Kashmir, Orissa and West Bengal which covers electrification of Un-electrified (UE) / De-electrified (DE) and Partially Electrified (PE) villages and service connections to BPL households at an estimated cost of about Rs 2,900 crore. During 2011-12 ,NHPC has electrified 460 UE/DE villages and provided connections to 1.9 lakh BPL households.  2020 PE villages have also been intensively electrified during the year. Cumulatively, till March 31st, 2012 NHPC had electrified 9092 Un-electrified / De-electrified and 16439 Partially Electrified villages and provided service connections to 18.2 lakh BPL households.

 

NHPC has also been entrusted with construction of rural roads and their maintenance for five years under Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) in six districts of Bihar. Under this scheme, 762 roads of 3242.58 km with a cost of Rs. 1763.49 crore have been cleared by Ministry of Rural Development, Govt. of India. As on 31st March 2012, 564 roads of 2701.24 km length have been completed.

 

 

Quality Management:

NHPC has got ISO 9001:2008, ISO 14001:2004 and OHSAS 18001:2007 for its Quality Management System, Environment Management System and Occupational Health and Safety Management System respectively for its Corporate Office and 14 locations including all Power Stations and few Regional Offices. NHPC has further gone ahead by integrating the above systems under Integrated Management System (IMS)/PAS 99. During 2011-12, NHPC has obtained one IMS certificate for Sewa-II Power Station.

 

Consultancy Services:

NHPC is providing consultancy services in the various fields of hydro power viz. river basin studies, survey works, design and engineering, geological studies, geotechnical studies, hydraulic transient studies, hydrological studies, contract management, construction management, equipment planning, underground construction, testing commissioning, operation & maintenance etc. to leading organizations globally. NHPC is registered with World Bank, Asian Development Bank, African Development Bank, Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development and Central Water Commission as a Consultant in the area of Hydropower. Major consultancy assignments include assignments from Central and State Government agencies in India and neighboring countries e.g. Bhutan, Myanmar & Tajikistan. Eighty four consultancy assignments have already been completed besides 17 are ongoing.

 

 

 

 

Global Initiatives:

The Company plans to continue expanding its international operations and help in harnessing the hydropower potential available internationally by leveraging its existing relationships and goodwill earned through past consultancy assignments. The expertise available with NHPC is being utilized in the area of hydropower development in countries like Bhutan, Myanmar, Tajikistan and Nigeria.

 

Under the ‘Action Plan’ on India-Bhutan cooperation in hydropower development of 10,000 MW by the year 2020, NHPC had been entrusted with the work for preparation of DPR of Chamkharchhu-I HE Project and Preparation of PFRs of Kuri Gongri Reservoir Projects in Bhutan. The draft DPR for Chamkharchhu – I HE Project (770 MW) has been submitted to Royal Govt. of Bhutan/ Govt. of India in March 2012. Discussions are underway with Bhutanese counterpart for formation of JV Company in Bhutan for implementation of Chamkharchhu-I HE Project under BOOT model. The draft PFR for Kuri Gongri Basin Projects has been submitted to RGoB/ GoI in May 2012. NHPC is also providing design & Engineering consultancy services to Mangdechhu Hydroelectric Project Authority (MHPA) for implementation of Mangdechhu HE Project (720 MW) in Bhutan.

 

The works at Varzob-I HE Project in Tajikistan is going on as per schedule. The works of RMU of the project is assigned to NHPC under a Tripartite Agreement signed among MEA, BHEL and NHPC.

 

NHPC carried out technical due diligence study of Shiroro Hydroelectric Power Station in Nigeria for M/s Dangote Industries Limited.

 

NHPC has been entrusted the work of Additional Investigations and Preparation of Updated Detailed Project Reports for Tamanthi and Shwezaye Hydropower and Multipurpose Projects in Myanmar as consultancy assignments by Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), Government of India. The DPRs of 1200 MW Tamanthi and 880 MW Shwezaye projects have been submitted in October 2011 and April 2012 respectively. NHPC has been designated as “Executing Agency” for Tamanthi and Shwezaye HE Projects.

 

IT & Communication:

NHPC considers Information Technology (IT) to be a strategic tool to improve overall productivity and efficiency. Therefore, its IT strategy is aligned with its business strategy of constructing hydropower projects, operation & maintenance of power plants to ensure high machine availability & maximum energy generation and integrated management of all its resources and key activities. Robust IT infrastructure has been setup in more than 54 locations/offices of NHPC across the country which are connected through multimode/fail-safe terrestrial and satellite communication systems based on MPLS-VPN/VSAT- KuBand / Broadband technologies and have become the lifeline for effective communication across the organization.

 

NHPC has presently co-located key servers at TIER-III Data Centre of NICSI at Delhi and Disaster Recovery (DR) site has been operationalized at its Regional Office at Kolkata.

 

NHPC has also created policy frameworks for managing the IT systems and assets owned by it so that they are optimally used in secured manner. Adequate IT security measures have been put in place to this effect.

 

NHPC has successfully implemented an enterprise-wide Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) Software Solution to help in managing optimum utilization of generating assets, accelerated development of construction projects and thereby improving quality, productivity and profitability of the organization. The key modules of ERP are live in all over 54 locations.  After successful implementation of ERP, NHPC has been able to reap the benefits like Up-to-date Employee Information, Universal codification for materials, assets and suppliers across NHPC resulting into standardization, Centralized Payroll processing, Instant crediting of Salary & Establishment payments into employees’ account through NEFT,  Reduced paper consumption, Timeliness and accuracy of information, Better monitoring and quicker resolution of queries etc.          

 

Research & Development activities:

 

  • ·         Clean Development Mechanism: NHPC has taken several initiatives in its endeavors to avail benefits under CDM as well as other carbon trading initiatives.

Teesta-V Power Station has been validated under Verified Emission Reductions (VERs) Scheme. Approximately 2 crore VERs are expected to be issued within a period of 10 years. Crediting period shall be renewed for another 10 year. Sale of VER for the generation period from April, 2008 to September, 2009 has been initiated. During 2011-12, NHPC has earned Rs 64 Lakh by selling total 4.5 lakh VERs.

 

Two medium sized hydroelectric projects namely Nimoo Bazgo (3×15 MW) and Chutak (4×11 MW) located in Leh & Kargil Districts of J&K state have already been registered by CDM Executive Board of UNFCCC. Nimoo Bazgo and Chutak Projects will reduce emissions of 187,893 metric tonne CO2 equivalent and 166,831 metric tonne CO2 equivalent annually respectively after their commissioning. Eligibility of these projects under the new methodology (Renewable energy power generation in isolated grids) is being examined so that CDM Registration of these projects may be revised.

 

  • ·         Work on Computational Fluid Dynamics: Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) Lab in NHPC, Corporate Office has been established to analyze the flow pattern in the water conductor system and to validate the design of hydro power components and design assumptions. In this regard, CFD analysis of water flow through surge shaft & Pressure Shaft of Teesta-V Power Station and Dam-spillway of Subansiri Lower HE Project has been completed.

 

  • ·         National Perspective Plan (NPP) for R&D Project: A research project proposal “Tunneling in Water Charged Zones under High Hydrostatic Pressure” has been entrusted to NHPC through Central Power Research Institute by Ministry of Power, Govt. of India with a financial outlay of Rs 109.03 lakh & duration of 2 years. Under MOU, M/s National Metallurgical Laboratory, Jamshedpur has developed a new alloy which would have better erosion resistant characteristics. The testing of the material on miniature components is underway. Once the properties of this alloy are proven, it shall help us in manufacture of erosion resistant underwater turbine components for our hydro projects.

 

  • ·         NHPC is in the process to develop wind power near its Power Stations/Projects. DPR has been prepared for the Development of Wind Power Project at Bidda area near Salal Power Station in J&KMoU with J&K state Govt. for execution of this project is under process.  Assessment of Wind Power potential has been conducted at 13 locations around four NHPC Power Stations/Projects. Two potential sites namely Khirdidar near Chamera-I Power Station in Himachal Pradesh and Likar near Nimoo Bazgo Project in J&K have been identified for installation of wind monitoring stations.

 

Human Resource Development:

A comprehensive area of training related to latest technical development, behavioural competencies in changing economic scenario and a skill upgradation to the workforce was designed during the year. The vast area of training during the year included IMS programs, Fire and safety, Disaster management, Women empowerment, CSR, Health related issues and many more besides the areas of technical and behavioral competencies.

 

In continuity to the training program for the Engineers of African countries, this year also NHPC has done training programs on operation & maintenance of Power House and Dam for the foreign participants, which was well received and widely appreciated.

 

NHPC is extending its training support to the future Engineers/ Managers by providing summer training to the students of various Institutions/ Academies.  Apart from this, the Training Centres of NHPC at different locations are extending training support to other Power generating companies like THDC etc.

 

NHPC has also continued association with premier academic institutions like IIT-Roorkee, IIT-Delhi, IIM-Bangalore, IIM-Calcutta, IIM-Kozhikode, IIM-Indore, IIM-Lucknow, MDI-Gurgaon, IMT-Ghaziabad, ISB-Hyderabad, ASCI-Hyderabad, ESCI-Hyderabad, CPRI-Bangalore, NCB-Ballabgarh,ISM-Dhanbad, BHEL-Bhopal, NWA-Pune etc.Training & development programmes are also conducted through reputed manufacturers like ABB, Areva, Alstom, VA-Tech, Siemens etc. for keeping employees updated with the state-of-the-art technologies.

 

The target for training and HRD, which was fixed under MoU for the FY 2011-12 was well achieved and crossed the level of excellence in the month of January 2012 far ahead of the time given for above.

 

During the FY 2011-12, NHPC has recruited 221 no. of trainees under various disciplines of Engineering and Non-Engineering fields.

 

Corporate Social Responsibility:

NHPC, with its continued commitment towards Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and ethical behaviour, has contributed to the economic development and improving the quality of life of internal as well as external stakeholders and the society at large. NHPC has adopted a structured Scheme on Corporate Social Responsibility in line with DPE guidelines on CSR initiatives w.e.f. 2010-11.  During the FY 2011-12, a budget of 0.5% of PAT was allocated to CSR activities of NHPC and the target was also set accordingly. The focus was kept on rural India and backward districts of hill states like J&K, Himachal Pradesh, Sikkim, Uttarakhand, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam etc.

 

NHPC has undertaken a number of community development initiatives and spent about Rs.10 crores in the following areas:

 

Education: Various skill development/ vocational training and other programs have been organized to improve skills and employability of the people in surrounding areas of Project/ Power Stations.

 

11 nos. of ITIs have  already been adopted (5 in J&K, 4 in Uttarakhand and 2  in  Arunachal Pradesh) through Public Private Partnership (PPP)/ Vocational Training Improvement Programme/ Centre of Excellence (CoE) Scheme.

 

More than 800 nos. SC/ST students studying in nearby schools of NHPC Power stations/ Project/ Townships have been provided scholarships during the year 2011-12 with the vision that this financial support lights up the lives of these young scholars and plays an important part in realizing their dreams.

 

Health: A number of free Medical Camps were organized in surrounding areas of Project/ Power Stations.Seven Maternity centers were established / upgraded to take care of women and children. Number of toilets have been constructed for women in remote villages.  A large number of immunization programs and medical check-ups have been organized for children studying in nearby schools of NHPC Projects & Power stations besides regular health camps focusing on women, children, disabled and old age persons.

 

Peripheral Development: Special attention is given to creation/ up-gradation of community health/ Portable water/ sanitation/ educational facilities in partnership with the concerned government agencies and the local community in J&K and Himachal Pradesh.

 

Others: NHPC employees have time and again rallied to help victims of natural calamities and contributing to relief and rehabilitation measures. Relief and rehabilitation works were undertaken in the areas devastated by heavy rain and cloud burst at Leh-Ladakh and heavy earthquake in the state of Sikkim.  NHPC promoted rural sports by providing equipments and other facilities.

During the year 2011-12 NHPC received various prestigious awards. Some of the important awards are enlisted below:

 

  • ·         NHPC has been awarded the ‘Best Performing Generation Company (Hydro)’ at Power Line Awards 2012. The award was presented by Shri Sushilkumar Shinde, Hon’ble Union Minister of Power during the Power Line Awards 2012 held at New Delhi on 15th May 2012.
  • ·         NHPC has been awarded the “Amity Corporate Excellence Award for Innovative Training and HR Practices” conferred by Amity International Business School on 22nd February 2012.
  • ·         NHPC was conferred the ‘First Prize for 2010-11 for outstanding work in implementation of Rajbhasha amongst Power Sector Utilities’ during the Meeting of Hindi Advisory Committee held at Aurangabad, Maharashtra.
  • ·         CMD, NHPC awarded ‘Top Rankers Excellence- Achiever of The Year Award’ for 2011 by Top Rankers on 23.12.2011.
