What India wears to work

It has only been a decade and a half since Indian women have found a new and a prominent role in the corporate segment. With mostly no clear rules for work-wear, they have been experimenting with everything from stone washed jeans to masculine blazers to a kurta that looks nothing more than casual home wear. They are always struggling to find the right outfits for their office and are left with no other option but to go with whatever is available.

There was an era when an Indian Woman would talk like a man, walk like a man and dress like a Man in oversized clothes, masculine colours and exaggerated shoulder blades to define power dressing in a male dominated Boardroom. But for a modern Indian woman power dressing is all about being comfortable in their own skin.

Designer Varija Bajajsays “It has really pained me time and again to see Indian working women landing up in Resort-wear at business conferences, sometimes even in sloppy homewear in boardroom meetings or even in shirts that droop from the shoulder and don’t fit at the waist. It’s not who they are. It’s the choice they are imposed with in the name of comfort, availability and lack of awareness. It is high time I take this as a moral responsibility to give Indian women at work their due pride-something that reflects their true self.”

Office&You with its immense research and knowledge is focusing on Indian culture, body shapes and skin tones of working women professionals. It is Reinventing Workwear for INDIAN Women. For the very first time a designer brand is not just focusing on the art but the science of aesthetics.

“Indian body structure is very different from our western counterparts. With extensive research on Indian body types we have realized that an average Indian body of a woman is 5ft 2inches with narrow shoulders and is pear shaped vis a vis 5ft 6 inch, broader shoulders and rectangle or an apple shaped western women.” O&Y by designer Varija Bajajhas intensively applied  figure correction techniques through which they camouflage most defects and give an illusion of a relatively perfect figure.

Every creation by O&Yis an outcome of understanding human behavior, cultural preferences, body shapes, skin-tones, age groups, weather conditions, social commitments and public appearances which is collated with latest technological developments. Various processes liker anti-crease, anti perspirant and anti-peeling have been given serious considerations.

“Providing appropriateness in the given cultural surroundings has been a strong guiding factor for us to design. We have adapted strong cultural narratives of an Indian women for our O&Y Woman” says designer Varija Bajaj
