WHEN BEDRIDDEN PATIENTS WALK ITS NOT ONLY THE WILL OF THE PATIENT BUT THE HOSPITAL EFFICIENT TEAM TOO THAT COUNTS
New Delhi:The Department of Rehabilitation Medicine and Physiotherapy at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital has been offering specialized care to its patrons for almost 19 years now. With the up-gradation in the department the hospital continues to show its commitment towards the science of rehabilitation. Early mobilization, independence and resuming routine activities of the patients are the three main goals of the physiotherapist and occupational therapist. Gone are the days when patients were bed ridden for long periods; today they are mobilized out of bed two to three days after major surgeries (Spine Surgeries, Liver transplant, joint replacement, By pass surgeries etc.) and major ailments. It is rightly said that Physiotherapist and Occupational therapist are movement specialists.
Cases like of Mr. Gaurav Sharma, 19years old swimmer who had lost all his hope as he met with an accident in 2010 while diving into the pool and is back to his normalcy now said that the dedication and expertise of the professional in the department has literally given him the second lease of life. He had injured his spinal cord, lost control over all his limbs (a quadriplegic) and has underwent rehabilitation for the three months in 2010 after he met with the accident and attained normalcy. The spinal experts after physiotherapy then noticed and appreciated a marked improvement in his general mobility and functional abilities.
Under the effective leadership of Dr.D.S.Rana, Chairman, Board of Management and Head of Nephrology ,Sir Gangaram hospital ,the hospital has come a long way offering patients almost every treatment under one roof which includes specialized scanning,surgeries etc. Sir Ganga Ram hospital has a multidisciplinary team in place which provides this care to all its patients. Presently advanced rehabilitation services are offered at the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine & Physiotherapy of Sir Ganga Ram Hospital. This includes unweighing system (Body weight support tread mill training), which is used to make a quadriplegic/ paraplegic walk on a treadmill. This helps in early mobility of such patients as well as motivates the patient to actively participate in the rehabilitation session. Other equipments include balance master and dynamic stair case which are useful in patient with balance impairments, knee and hip replacements, paralysis, head injury, post fracture cases, ACL Repair and rehabilitation, severe ankle sprain patient and elderly with balance impairments. The professionals in the department work in close collaboration with medical fraternity.
