Sir Ganga Ram Hospital is sad beyond words to learn of the demise of Prof Verma , whom we all knew and his contribution for over 4 decades as a teacher and as a Senior colleague. His scholarship and intellectual acuity impressed every one who was privileged to have interacted with him. Hospital considers blessed to have learned from his wisdom. His contribution to building the Department of Genetics and Genomics at SGRH is a saga of success, hard work and great vision, which surely shall endure for generations to come.
His passing has left a huge void in SGRH which shall keep reminding us of his invaluable role in building our alma mater.
A lasting tribute to his memory will be to continue cherishing his ideals and to inculcate his no non sense approach to research with honesty and integrity..

Dr I C Verma was the head of genetic medicine department at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, New Delhi. He was earlier professor of paediatrics and genetics at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi. He received genetics training in UK, US and Switzerland. He was a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians (FRCP), London, the American Academy of Paediatrics (FAAP), and the National Academy of Medical Sciences (FAMS), New Delhi.

Dr Verma had received a number of national awards – Ranbaxy Science Award, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) award, the National Academy of Medical Sciences (NAMS) award and Dr B C Roy (Medical Council of India) National Award. He was a member and vice chairman of the ethics committee of the International Human Genome Organization (HUGO) and served as an adviser in genetics to the World Health Organisation (WHO) in Geneva, and to Roche Genetics in Basel, Switzerland.

He had been mentioned in the Limca Book of Records 2003 as a pioneer in genetics in India. He had vast experience in genetic counselling, serving about 2,000 cases with genetic problems every year, and bringing the benefits of genetics and genomics to large number of patients.
