The Department of Trade & Taxes, Government of NCT of Delhi, seized huge stock of smuggled cigarettes: Shri S.S Yadav

  • Two mini-trucks carrying smuggled cigarettes were impounded by the night patrolling team of the Department.
  • Close surveillance is being maintained to catch the tax evaders.

The Commissioner, Trade and Taxes Shri S S Yadav informed that Department has launched a massive drive against dealers/persons bringing undeclared goods into Delhi from other States. A number of  inspection teams of the department have been deployed round the clock at major entry points of Delhi, Container depots, Railway Stations, Airport as well as major market areas in which intensive checking of goods vehicles is being conducted and those found bringing undeclared goods are being prosecuted under the provisions of the Delhi Value Added Tax Act, 2004.

Shri Yadav said that recently during the night patrolling on 12th November, 2015,  one of the department’s inspection team intercepted two mini-trucks at  the Badarpur Border. On checking, they were found fully loaded with cartons of imported cigarettes. Further investigations revealed that the cigarettes loaded in the trucks were of the Indonesian Brand ‘Gudang Garam International’.

Commissioner further said that the investigations so far indicates  that the cigarettes were imported illegally in the country. As per preliminary estimates, the approximate value of these cigarettes  is  above Rs.50 lakhs. The relevant Enforcement Agency of the Central Government has also been roped in for thorough investigations and to take necessary action in the matter under the relevant legal provisions.

Shri Yadav said that while the Department of Trade & Taxes is taking all necessary steps to facilitate trade in Delhi, it is also taking strict action against the tax evaders. It is made clear that if any person is found evading taxes or being engaged in illegal trading activities would not be spared and would be strictly dealt with as per law.
